But this harmless stuffed snake is safe to snuggle and squeeze. This week’s CSRI snake of the week is Bitis nasicornis aka the rhinoceros viper, butterfly viper, river jack or horned puff adder. It follows the taxonomy of McDiarmid et al. Found in the forests of Western and Central Africa, the rhinoceros viper, aka butterfly viper, rhinoceros horned viper, horned puff adder, or river jack, is a venomous snake that is renown for its beautiful coloration as well as its nasal horns. The butterfly viper, also known as the rhinoceros viper, is a puff adder endemic to central and western Africa. In the wild, the bright colors on this vibrant rhino viper would warn of its poisonous venom. ![]() This is a list of all genera, species and subspecies of the subfamily Viperinae, otherwise referred to as viperines, true vipers, pitless vipers or Old World vipers. ![]()
